Description
The collections represent the social history of the maritime communities, the Atlantic slave trade, manufactured products for export and raw imported materials. Other maritime themes include naval ships adopted by or named after local towns, local boat types such as the Morecambe Bay prawner and also the Lancaster Port Commission, its lighthouse at Walney and landmark at Fleetwood. The small group of preserved Vessels includes the 1934 Fishermen's Lifeboat 'Sir William Priestley', 'Coronation Rose', a 1911 bay boat, the skiff 'Camelia' and whammel-boat 'Hannah.'

Other themes include shipping, coastal defence, maritime crafts, over 40 ship models, navigation equipment and plans/charts relating to Morecambe Bay, local rivers and coastal areas, inshore fishing equipment including items relating to shrimp-trawling, cockling, musselling, salmon fishing and also fishing activities on the River Lune.

Building Information
The museum occupies the former Custom House designed by Richard Gillow in 1764 and an adjacent warehouse situated on St. George's Quay, the main 18th century harbour.
Collections Overview
Maritime history of Lancaster and area including ship models, preserved vessels, ship and boat building tools and related material from local shipyards, items connected to the maritime and fishing industries of the area, photographs, social history and domestic items from the maritime communities, plus archives.
Display Overview
Displays include ship models and objects relating to the Port of Lancaster, the history of the local fishing industry, the Lancaster Canal, Morecambe Gas Field, 'Crossing the Sands' and the ecology of Morecambe Bay. There are also regular temporary exhibitions.
Star Objects
Preserved vessels on display include 'Sir William Priestley' and 'Coronation Rose'.
