Collections Overview
The Designated collections of science and industry themes demonstrate Manchester's development as an industrial city and focus on the late 18th century onwards. Objects are collected where they were made or used in Manchester and relate to themes such as power, energy, transport, aviation, space, paper and textile manufacture, printing, information technology and scientific instruments. Social history is also recorded through associated collections of objects, documents, drawings and photographs of people and companies from the region.
Display Overview
Permanent displays cover aspects of the collection and include the Transport gallery featuring the story of aviation and the Power Hall that houses the large industrial machinery, internal combustion engines and road and rail stock. 'The Making of Manchester' presents the story of Manchester from Roman times onwards in addition to the cotton industry in the 19th century and its role in creating 'the world's first industrial city.' Visitors can watch raw cotton being processed into textiles on the working machinery by skilled demonstrators.
