Building Information
The museum was established in 1974, principally through the efforts of Miss Robinson, who also assembled the original collections. The building in Maryport is also home to the local Tourist Information Centre. The museum was refurbished in the 1990s.
Collections Overview
The core collection is almost entirely of local provenance and was assembled by the museum's founder and a local resident, Annie Robinson. The theme of Maryport maritime history and painting tradition has been developed through subsequent donations by townspeople and those connected with the port and is represented through objects, paintings, models, photographs and general social history objects.
Display Overview
The displays features themes relating to the local, social, maritime and political history of Maryport, in addition to exhibitions on Fletcher Christian (of the 'Bounty') and Thomas Ismay (owner of the Titanic).
Star Objects
'A Breezy Day' by William Mitchell 1863 (painting of a ship rounding the outer wooden pier at South Harbour, Maryport); Sperm whale tooth etched with a picture of the whaler 'Eagle' in what is known as 'scrimshaw' work and mainly associated with the Anglo-American whaling ships in the first half of the 19th century.
