Description
The Natural Science collections are designated and comprise 320,00 items or 700-800,000 specimens and are the largest and most important in the region. Parts go back to the founding of the Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society in 1819 and some to 18th centruy and the earlier Musaeum Thorsbyanum of the late 17th century. Additions from field work and private and public collections in the 20th century.
Botany - cover most of the British flora with a large garden plant collection and some world wide material.Lichen collection of 10,000 is one of the largest non -national public collections. British and European fungi has several old European collections added.
Conchology collection of international importance with several 00's of type, figures and cited specimens, includes the Crawley collection of Mollusca.
Entomology - important international collections of ants and Lepidoptera and significant British collections of Hymenoptera, Diptera and other arthropods.

Collections Overview
There are 3 designated collections in Leeds; Fine and Decorative Arts, Industrial and Natural Science, but the collections also include Anthropology, Archaeology, Numismatics, Social History and Costume and Textiles. Collections are housed, stored and dispalyed in a number of buildings and will be described;- Abbey House for Social history; Armley and Thwaite Mills for Industry; City Art Gallery for Fine art; Lotherton hall for Costume and textiles and Temple Newsam for Decorative Arts.
