Building Information
The castle is a Norman shell keep that has been effectively occupied on a continuous basis right up to the time of its acquisition by Tamworth Council in 1899. It contains a series of domestic structures within its walls, erected at various periods during its history and now providing a unique record of life within a single structure over nearly 1000 years.
Collections Overview
The collections serve both to furnish and interpret the Castle itself, and to preserve and interpret the history of the Borough as a whole. They therefore cover a wide range of material, with a particular focus on local history and industries. The collection is limited to the humanities, since the natural sciences collections were transferred to other museums during the 1980s.
Display Overview
The astonishing building is well interpreted through a series of period displays covering the main periods of the castle's occupation up to the end of the 19th.C. The displays also include a large gallery devoted to the Tamworth story, in which the history of the town is presented via traditional and interactive exhibits.
