Building Information
A 16th.C. house with strong documented connections with William Shakespeare. It also has a long history as a literary shrine.
Collections Overview
The purpose of the Trust's collecting is to assemble material which relates to the family, life, times and works of William Shakespeare. The material in the collection covers most disciplines.
The Trust is also responsible for the care and general management of the renowned archive of the Royal Shakespeare Company (see entry for that institution).
Display Overview
The display objective is to present the house as a middle-class family home of the 1570s. Currently the displays include material that falls outside this time parameter; the Trust aims to achieve more consistent displays in the near future.
Star Objects
Portrait of Shakespeare by Gerald Soest
The High Cross market cross base
The birthplace building itself
