Collection Summary

Collection Title
Biology Collection
Description
There is the Wiltshire Society Flora, started by T B Flower and T A Preston in 1870 which contains some 3000 specimens collected from that time up to 1966 by various members of the society.

An important holding is the collection of lichens and bryophytes assembled by botanist Francis Rose, whose guide to flowering plants is the standard reference text on the subject (20th century).

There is also a 19th century stuffed lion from a local collection which has recently been identified as a Cape lion and is now extinct. Only three skulls and eight skins are listed as being held in museum collections worldwide.

Strength(s)
One contributor to the Society flora was the noted Wiltshire botanist J Donald Grose (d.1973). In 1981, his widow bequeathed the Grose Herbarium to the museum, a collection which is probably the museum's single most important holding. It comprises over 9000 sheets of fully documented pressed plant specimens, many of which were collected by Grose during his work on the Flora of Wiltshire and are therefore voucher material. The museum also has Grose's card index, notebooks and his own annotated copy of the Flora.
