Building Information
The museum is housed in an exceptionally fine 17th century free standing County Hall designed by Christopher Kempster, one of Wren's masons, in 1678-82. Grade I in brown limestone of 4 by 2 bays and 2 storeys with open ground floor. Giant pilasters on high plinths all round. Arched 3 light windows, hipped roof with top balustrade and cupola.
Collections Overview
Consists of a range of collections covering the periods from the Neolithic to the present including archaeology, locally made or used objects, textiles, documents, photographs, prints, film, video and oral history recordings. There is a small geology collection, numismatics, arms and armour and a fine orrery. The numbers only relate to material at Abingdon as the majority of the collections are housed with Oxford County Museums at Standlake.
