The collection consists of approximately 1200 items, including oil on canvas, watercolours, drawings, prints, sculpture. All of the collection is of either British origin or subject. The collection's greatest strength lies in portraits (usually of civic leaders, still lives by local artists, local landscapes and topographical works. There are oil paintings by Sir Stanley Spencer, Bernard Adeney and Gerard Chowne and several paintings by William Nicholson.

Building Information
The collection is housed in the Town Hall, a Grade 1 listed building, designed by John Carr of York and built 1774-76. The civic rooms include the ballroom, the Council Chamber and the Mayor’s parlour.
Collections Overview
Newark Town Council possesses approximately 1300 objects accumulated over period of 450 years by Newark Borough Council. These were transferred to the Charter Trustees of the Town in 1974, and from them in 1980, to the Town Council under the Local Authorities (England) Property Order 1973. The collection is housed in the Town Hall, a Grade 1 listed building, designed by John Carr of York, and built between 1774-76.
Display Overview
The displays on the second floor of the Town Hall are in three galleries - one for fine art, one for objects relating to the civic side of the town and the third named the Spotlight Gallery which has regularly changing temporary exhibitions. On the second floor visitors can see the elegant 18th century Assembly Room restored to its former glory, the Council Chamber overlooking the historic market place which contains a selection of portraits of civic dignitaries and the Mayor's Parlour with its superb silver plate.
Star Objects
A 1686 Loving Cup in silver gilt that is used annually to celebrate the election of the new Mayor after Mayor Making.
