Collection Summary

Collection Title
The library holds an extensive natural history reference collection containing many historical and current natural history books and journals, predominantly relating to the North East of England
The Natural History Society's archives are also available for reference. A written application may be required for access to some of the archive material in the Bewick Collection

Please note that due to refurbishment of the Hancock Museum the library will be closed from April 2006 until 2009 when we will be re-housed in a purpose built library at the back of the museum with the Society of Antiquaries library (moved from the Black Gate) and the John Cowan library (moved out of the University.

Each Society collection will be owned and run separately although there may be a common catalogue as well as independent databases.

During the renovation of the Hancock museum, the Society's archivist is usually available on Mon, Tues and Thur from 10-1pm.
Please note that due to refurbishment of the Hancock Museum the library will be closed from April 2006 until 2009. Meanwhile a skeleton reference library has been established at 3/4 Claremont Road, based on items requested to be available during closure by its members and staff. If anyone is looking for specific items or subjects it is recommended that telephone enquiries (0191)2326386) be made initially before trekking up Claremont Road. General Natural History advice and ideas of where to find items is of course always available - The Society is a friendly lot
