Chained Library
The foundation collection of the library. It includes 227 medieval manuscripts and c. 1,300 printed books. The collection is particularly strong in ecclesiastical subjects such as bibles and canon law. Other subjects such as history are also covered, the collection is a relatively complete survival of a historic library. Within it is the medieval cathedral library, probably the most complete medieval library in the UK

Can be viewed as part of public exhibition (see http://www.herefordcathedral.org/mappa.asp). Items can be consulted in Upper Library, notice required at least one day in advance of visit. Letter of introduction and id required to see medieval manuscripts and some printed books (contact Hereford Cathedral Library in advance of visit).

Visiting Information
Monday and Friday 10:00-1:00, Tuesday and Wednesday 10:00-4:00, Thursday 10:00-7:00, 1st Saturday of each month 10:00-1:00.
Free access to print resources. £10 per annum charge for borrowing. Letter of recommendation and photographic ID required for access to medieval manuscripts and some historic printed books (contact library for detailed information). Approximately half the collections (lesser-used and historic material and all archives)is held in closed access. Most can be fetched on demand (subject to staff availability). For historic material, housed in the Chained Library, requests must be made the day before it is required.
Open access library. No notification of visit needed if access to open shelf material wanted. Advance notice preferred for access to archives but documents can be fetched on demand, subject to staff availability. Notice required day before for access to material in Chained Library. Telephone in advance if specific material wanted or to make appointment to see specific member of staff.
Full wheelchair access, lift and disabled toilet available.
Collections Overview
The library has been in existence since at least the twelfth century and continues to be added to. It focusses on religious subject, particularly as well as local history. The cathedral archives hold the records of the Dean and Chapter of Hereford which date from the eleventh century to the present day, as well as related bodies.
