Collection Summary

Collection Title
Weston Park Portrait Collection
The Collection is the indigenous collection of portraits of the hereditary owners of Weston Park, including members of the Wilbraham, Newport and Bridgeman families, together with other relations and contemporary friends.

In the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries notable portrait acquisitions of non-family sitters were made by Francis Newport, 1st Earl of Bradford of the first creation (1619-1708), and by his son, the Hon. Thomas Newport, Lord Torrington (1655-1719). The result of this and subsequent collecting is a representative span of portraiture which extends from van Dyck through to Paul Benney.

In addition to the collection which was gifted to the Weston Park Foundation in lieu of tax in 1986, the Foundation has been able to acquire several portraits that were either previously in the collection or which are related to the collection including - in the latter instance - three ink sketches of the 3rd Earl of Bradford and his Countess by Sir Francis Grant which were purchased in 2007.
