Building Information
Shrewsbury Castle dates to the 11th. and 12th. centuries, and last saw action during the Civil War. It was remodelled by Thomas Telford during the late 18th.C. It became the property of the Local Authority in 1924, and the home of the Shropshire Regimental Museum in 1985. It was the target of a terrorist firebomb attack in 1992, when some of the collections as well as the building were damaged. It re-opened following extensive restoration in 1995.
Collections Overview
The museum contains the collections of the four Shropshire regiments: the King's Shropshire Light Infantry, the Shropshire Yeomanry, the Shropshire Royal Horse Artillery and the 4th. Bn. King's Shropshire Light Infantry TA. Collections include colours with battle honours, regimental silver and china, uniforms and badges, weapons and medals (including three Victoria Crosses).
Display Overview
Displays focus on the early history of the castle and the Shropshire soldier; the history of the Shropshire regiments world-wide to 1914; the two World Wars; and the latest phase of reduction and service under the UN flag.
Star Objects
The standard of the Harford Dragoons, taken from the American Army outside Washington in 1814. Three Victoria Crosses. The baton of Grand Admiral Doenitz, Hitler's successor, taken in 1945.
