Carlo Gatti
Dates: 1817 / 1978
Short Biography: Gatti came to London from Switzerland in 1847 and lived in Holborn's Italian community. At first he ran a stall selling waffles but in 1849 went into business with Bolla, running a cafe, with chocolate and ice cream as their specialities. Gatti may have been the first to sell ice cream in London - he cut ice from the Regent's Canal with which to freeze it.
