Elizabeth Murray Duchess of Lauderdale

Short Biography: Daughter of William Murray, 1st Earl of Dysart, she inherited Ham House on his death in 1655 and in 1670 was made Countess of Dysart. Married first Sir Lionel Tollemache and then John Maitland, 1st Duke of Lauderdale, Sec of State for Scotland, with whom she extended and refurbished Ham as a palatial villa. Much of the luxurious decor survives
