Overview of collections

The museum contains collections of regional importance from a wide range of sites and excavations in East and West Sussex, notably material recovered by the Curwens in some of the key excavations of the inter-war and post-war years. The particular strengths of the collections are the Palaeolithic, Iron Age and early Saxon material. The museum also contains extensive collections of pictures, prints, brass rubbings, postcards and photographs, notably an important collection of early photographs of Sussex subjects. Of particular importance are the works by the painters James Lambert Senior and Junior.

Overview of how collections are displayed

Barbican House Museum houses the Sussex Archaeological Society's archaeology collections. The collections on display date from the prehistoric to medieval/early post medieval periods; the reserve collections contain excavated material up to the early twentieth century. There is also a changing temporary exhibition gallery and 'The Story of Lewes Town' - a sound and light show based on a scale model of the town. Thomas Read Kemp and William de Warenne provide a commentary for the walkabout audio tour of the castle and its grounds. During the summer, the castle garden provides a magnificent stage for theatrical, musical and interpretation events.
