Overview of collections

The Gallery was established in 1856 to collect likenesses of men and women who had made or were making a significant contribution to national life in British history and culture from the early 16th century to present. There is a primary collection of about 10,000 portraits, 6,000 works on paper, a refernce collection and an Archive and Photographs collection.
