Overview of collections

Aberdeen Art Gallery opened in 1885 and features important collections of fine and decorative arts including outstanding examples of Modern Art alongside works by the Impressionists and Scottish Colourists within its marble-lined galleries. Visitors can also see contemporary craft, Aberdeen silver and a wide range of decorative art.

Star Objects at this location

The Gallery includes strong works from several significant schools in Fine Art. Particular highlights include Francis Bacon's 'Pope I - Study after Pope Innocent X after Velasquez', 'Caerlaverock Castle' (c. 1832. Joseph Mallord William Turner RA), 'Flood In The Highlands' by Sir Edwin Landseer and 'The Raising of Lazarus', (1800, William Blake). There are excellent collections of French Impressionist and Post Impressionist art including works by Monet, Renoir, Sisley, Bonnard, Leger and Toulouse Lautrec and modern British and international art by Stanley Spencer, Paul Nash, Ben Nicholson and Robert Motherwell and contemporary work by, amongst others, Damien Hirst, Gilbert & George, Julian Opie and Gavin Turk.
