Overview of collections

The collection covers the railways of the North East with emphasis on the area formerly served by the North Eastern Railway, with particular reference to the Stockton and Darlington Railway and the railway industry of Darlington. "Locomotion" (1825) and "Derwent" (1845),both on loan from the National Railway Museum, an 1846 passenger carriage and 2 main-line express locomotives, nos 1463 and 910 and examples of industrial locomotives are complemented by smaller items including station and lineside signs, locomotive nameplates, number plates, signalling equipment, lamps, uniforms, furniture, tableware and paintings. The core collection was bequeathed by Ken Hoole, an historian of the railways of the North East, now supplemented by material from the library collection of the North Eastern Railway Association, the North Eastern Railway Servants' Pension Society Records Cards for family history; a photographic collection of bridges built by the Cleveland Bridge Company and archive material from the Railway Museum and the recently acquired (2002) John Mallon collection of 24,000 photographs, plans, diagrams, drawings and a staff register of engine men and fire men and company histories.

Overview of how collections are displayed

Based at the Darlington Railway Centre and Museum the Ken Hoole Study Centre houses the reference collection left by Ken Hoole. Entrance hall and ticket office are restored in period style and display items such as porters' barrows, luggage, posters and advertising signs. There are also several static larger-scale models, together with a selection of commercially produced model railway items.The site also has the Darlington Railway Preservation Society, based in the goods shed, and the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust, based in a part of the carriage works and renamed Darlington Locomotive Works. A short stretch of track has been laid within the site for occasional steam locomotive operation.
