The collections represent a range of themes associated with Lancaster and surrounding areas, from Prehistoric, Roman & medieval archaeology to the important maritime traditions. Objects include social history material, fine and decorative art, costume, numismatics, map models, stained glass, items connected with the local trades and industries and photographs and archives.

Permanent displays illustrate the history of the city of Lancaster and surrounding areas. There are also regular temporary exhibitions. (See also the King's Own Regimental Museum housed at the museum).
