Overview of collections

The museum aims to present the story of the silk manufacturing industry and associated local history through collections of machinery, ancillary equipment, tools, textiles, costume, photographs and archives and social history material relating to Macclesfield and other similar silk centres.

Overview of how collections are displayed

Displays present the history of silk and the silk industry in Macclesfield through objects, graphics and an award-winning AV programme. Newly designed exhibitions of 2002 feature the role of silk in fashion through displays of costume and textiles. The exhibitions also feature the story of the building (a former Sunday School) and the wider story of education in the town, with a Victorian Schoolroom used for role-play.
