Overview of collections

The collections have been developed, since the establishment of the University in 1900, as teaching collections within relevant faculties. They are now managed in four distinct groups, two of which (the Barber Institute and the Lapworth Museum) are separately registered. The collections considered here are those of the Chamberlain Institute of Pathology, and the University Collections, which in turn consist of collections belonging to individual Schools or Faculties as well as collections held on behalf of the University as a whole. The material concerned includes ethnographical, archaeological, scientific, biological, fine art and decorative art objects.

Overview of how collections are displayed

The teaching collections are mostly accessible only by prior appointment to the general public, and are generally displayed in showcased form. The University collection of fine and decorative art is freely accessible to all in public spaces throughout the campus. Ceremonial silver and plate may only be seen by appointment.
