Overview of collections

The American Museum illustrates how the American people lived from the end of the 17th century onwards. The museum was the first museum of Americana to be established outside the United States and was founded by Americans Dallas Pratt and John Judkyn to foster mutual understanding between Britain and America.

The life of Americans from the late 17th to the mid 19th centuries is shown with a series of furnished period rooms and galleries containing decorative and fine arts material. The diverse cultures found in America such as the Shaker, Pennsylvania German, American Indian, African American and New Mexican are featured. Archives, books and maps are also displayed.
