Overview of collections

This museum is Designated for the pre-eminent importance of its armoured vehicle collection and is considered to be the world's finest collection of tanks. The Tank Museum collection covers a wide geographical and historical span and the collection is particularly strong on the origin and evolution of the tank, which was a British invention. The collection is supported by an important archive of related material.

Overview of how collections are displayed

There are approximately 200 vehicles on display illustrating the full history of tank development. Just over half are of British origin, the remainder are American, German, Russian and French. There are also exhibits from Brazil, China, South Africa, Japan and Sweden.



The exhibition traces the story from the development of the first tank prototype through to modern tank technology, and includes vehicles from both World Wars. There are ten tanks from the First World War, of which two are maintained in running order.
