Overview of collections
There are 3 designated collections in Leeds; Fine and Decorative Arts, Industrial and Natural Science, but the collections also include Anthropology, Archaeology, Numismatics, Social History and Costume and Textiles. Collections are housed, stored and dispalyed in a number of buildings and will be described;- Abbey House for Social history; Armley and Thwaite Mills for Industry; City Art Gallery for Fine art; Lotherton hall for Costume and textiles and Temple Newsam for Decorative Arts.Overview of how collections are displayed
The House has one of the most important collections of decorative artsin Britain, including Chippendale furniture and silver.Known as the 'Hampton Court of the North', Temple Newsam House is set in 1200 acres of parkland.
The Tudor - Jacobean mansion collections displayed in their original room settings including one of the largest collections of Chippendale furniture in the country.
The "Picture Gallery" celebrated its 250th anniversary with a redecoration to when first conceived by Henry, Viscount Irwin , and has the largest and most complete set of furniture still in its original location in Britain, and a series of 83 Old Master and British paintings all cleaned and their frames regilded.
Adjacent to Temple Newsam House is the country's largest approved Rare Breeds Centre - Home Farm. Visitors to this working farm will see pigs, goats, horses and poultry. There are also displays of farm machinery and past farming methods. The Estate is also home to 300 acres of mixed woodland, providing a home for many insects, birds and mammals.
The house is closed until Summer 2003 for major repairs to the fabric including repairs to the roof, stonework and courtyard and improved visitor access to upper floors.
