Overview of collections

Kirklees Cultural Services has centralised collection storage and uses the museums, mainly historic houses, for display. The Service's collections cover the full range of subject areas from agriculture to zoology. The collections are described mainly under Tolson Memorial Museum qv, but Egyptology, local history, architecture and Natural History collections are described here.

Overview of how collections are displayed

The Bagshaw family travelled the world, especially Violet Bagshaw who brought back gifts from Alaska. See objects from Asia, Africa and the Americas representing real and mythical animals. Look at the Egyptian way of life and death in the Kingdom of Osiris with sound and light effects to re-create the interior of a tomb. The Enchanted Forest display helps to discover why tropical rain forests are important. Find out about local history and the decor of the Woodlands, home of the Bagshaws who founded this museum.
Wilton Park has its own nature trail and butterfly centre open in the summer.
