Overview of how collections are displayed

A steel working site with a long history - evidence suggests that metal working has been carried out on site since before 1200 AD. The site has been used for iron forging for at least 500 years and visitors can see how steel was produced, machinery was powered and how workers and their families lived in the
Manager's and workman's houses. The Works Gallery introduces the site and has interactive exhibits to show the industrial processes including crucible steel manufacture and colourful banners with historical material and photographs. The Hamlet became a scythe-making works using crucible steel made on site with heavy tilt hammers and grinding wheels powered by water wheels. These have been preserved and are used to demonstrate the old skills on special occasions.
