Overview of collections

The majority of the collection is excavated material from Roman, Anglian, Anglo-Scandinavian, medieval and post-medieval York with some prehistoric finds from around the City. It reflects all aspects of commerce, industry, communication, trade and everyday life and is particularly rich in the rare preservation of organic material.

Overview of how collections are displayed

JORVIK, the new reconstruction of the Viking City of York opened in April 2001and shows a city-wide picture of 10th century businesses, houses, backyards and bedrooms.
