Overview of collections

The core of the collection is the mechanisation of farming during the 19th and 20th centuries covering the historic county of Yorkshire, but there are in total 4,000 items including farm machinery, tools and domestic items, a library of 10,000 books and bound pamphlets, 1170 items in the archive and a land Army collection..

Overview of how collections are displayed

This complex on a 10 acre site offers an agricultural museum, Sunday trains on the old Derwent Valley line, a reconstruction of a rural village from the Dark Ages and a Roman Fort. The agricultural museum displays 19th and 20th century machinery, tools, a livestock building with a dairy, vet's surgery, blacksmith's forge and vintage tractors, and animals in abundance. Danelaw, a life-size reconstruction of a Dark Age village, is set in one and a half acres of parkland and the Roman fort, Brigantium.
