Overview of how collections are displayed

Shows 20th century modern art associated with St Ives and the work of major figures of British art. Opened June 1993, and offers works to be viewed in the surroundings that inspired them. In 1928 Alfred Wallis, Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood began an artists' colony and in 1939, Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth and Naum Gabo settled in St Ives. Post war a younger generation of artists including Peter Lanyon, John Wells, Roger Hilton, Bryan Wynter, Patrick Heron, Terry Frost and Wilhelmina Barns-Graham flourished. Also the ceramic arts established by Bernard Leach with Shoji Hamada in 1920 added another dimension and Barbara Hepworth's studio and garden are a further interest run by the Tate since 1980. A visit to the Hepworth Museum and Garden is a unique experience, at nearby Barnoon Hill, which gives insight into the work and outlook of one of Britain's most important twentieth-century artists.
