Overview of collections

These designated collections range through archaeology, biology, geology and numismatics at the Yorkshire Museum to fine art at the City Art Gallery and social history, costumes and textiles, and military history at the Castle Museum; ceramics are held by all three institutions, but will be described under Yorkshire Museum.
Outstanding exhibitions include Anglo-Saxon and Viking metalwork, Romanesque sculpture, fossil marine reptiles, and paintings by Parmigianino, Bellotto, Hogarth and Nash, while Kirkgate, the reconstructed Victorian Street in the Castle Museum, is a milestone in the history of museums.

Overview of how collections are displayed

The gallery shows 600 years of European painting from Italian Renaissance to 20th century and a collection of studio pattery plus a temporary exhibition programme.
