Overview of how collections are displayed

A fascinating and dynamic museum, authentically based on a World War Two Bomber Command Station made possible as the displaysuse a wartime film made by the French authorities showed Elvington as it had been in 1944. The volunteer workers were thus able to set up an accurate replica, right down to the packet of Woodbine cigarettes on top of the 'ops' desk in the control tower. The displays include the original Control Tower, Air Gunners' Collection, Barnes Wallis' prototype 'bouncing bomb', a new Airborne Forces Displayand the rapidly expanding collection of historical aircraft depicts aviation from its earliest days, to World War Two with the unique Halifax rebuild through to post war jets and an historic vehicle collection, archives, uniforms and other data about RAF and WRAF and stations in the war. The museum's first Open Day was on 11th August 1985 and it opened as a museum to the public for the first time on 31st May 1986.
