Overview of collections

An eclectic mix of collections reflecting early local collecting and more recent expansion. Large and important costume and textile collections, personalia, coins and tokens, ethnography, fine art and archives and emphemera relating to the objects.
Natural History Collections, 25000 specimens , transferred to Leeds City Museums in 1990 and Archaeology Collections transferrd to Kirklees Museums in 1979.

Overview of how collections are displayed

Bankfield was the home of Colonel Edward Akroyd, the largest wool manufacturer in Britain from 1837-1886. It is now the home of an important collection of textiles, costume, toys, crafts, multi-cultural artefacts and baskets. The museum is host to the acclaimed Duke of Wellington's Regimental Museum. Role-play, art and craft and object handling sessions are available.
