Overview of collections

The original collection dates from the 1880s and the Malton Antiquarian and Natural History Society and is entirely archaeological ranging from prehistory to medieval. From 1987 local and social history material relating to Malton and Norton and District including brewing, horse-racing and markets has been added.

Overview of how collections are displayed

A splendid Roman display with activities for all ages shows off the important archaeological collections especially the fort of Derventio, its vicus and associated industries including the potteries at Norton and Crambeck and Roman villas. Archaeology features elsewhere as material from Wharram Percy Deserted Medieval Village are displayed and some of the horse racing collection from this horse training town is often displayed.
