Overview of collections

This designated collection encompasses the 16th century to the present through paintings, sculpture, drawings, prints and watercolours, both British and European. Particular strengths are old masters, 17th century Netherlandish painting, marine painting, Hull topographical views, portraiture and figure painting, 18th to 20th century British and contemporary art and a Loan collection of the MAG collection of 200 contemporary works.
The overall breadth and quality of the Ferens' collection is unique in a provincial gallery. Leading art historian Christopher Wright comments, "any visitor can gain an overview of European painting with examples from the Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo periods, as well as fine examples of historic British Portraiture." This is not possible in most regional galleries. Within the scope, individual periods and themes are also robust. Although other northern galleries in particular have good collections of early 20th century British art for example, none have achieved such a comprehensive overview of the period. Indeed, Hull has also concentrated on developing particular themes to contribute to the distinctive character of the collection. The focus on portraiture is unique, and the range and quality is unparalleled outside the national collections. Although galleries like Plymouth, Bristol and Liverpool have important marine holdings, none can present such a complete picture of the genre as Hull, which has the best collection outside the National Maritime Museum.
