Overview of collections

The collections feature a diverse range of objects recording the history of the SE coast of Kent & approaches to Dover Strait. Strong maritime collections feature full-size boats, models, ship fittings & fixtures and equipment. There are also collections of weaponry, fine & applied art including local made pottery, photographs, numismatics, archaeological artefacts, local social, domestic and industrial objects and some natural history and geology material. The library & archive is a valuable collection of local reference works and documents.

Overview of how collections are displayed

The Main Gallery relates the story of the Deal boatmen, their craft and exploits. Other displays feature sailing craft and models, ships fittings and equipment, figureheads, pictures, prints and memorabilia of the local lifeboat crews and the Royal Marines stationed at Deal for over 300 years. There are also items recovered from the sea bed by hovellers, an assortment of cannon and recovered ammunition that serve to record some of the wartime actions, from Napoleon to the present, that have occurred off this coast.

The Heritage Gallery & Library contains many photographs, books, maps and documents relating to Deal and District history and a rotational selection of Deal's archaeology & architecture and its social & industrial development.

Star Objects at this location

One of the most important exhibits, situated at the far end of the main gallery, is the four/five oared Deal Galley "Saxon King."
