Overview of collections

The National Museum of Wales was founded by royal charter in 1907, but it contains the collections of the former Cardiff Museum of Natural History, Arts and Antiquities, opened in 1882. The collections were transferred to the present building in Cathays Park during the 1920s. Today the National Museum houses one of Europe’s finest art collections, archaeology displays that tell the early human history of Wales, and galleries dedicated to the evolution and natural history of Wales.
