Overview of collections

Hampshire Museums and Archives Service manages collections on the archaeology, history, art and environment of the county, in 19 historic sites and museums, 11 in partnership with District Councils, and in reserve in store at Chilcomb House, Winchester. The museums managed are Aldershot Military Museum; Rushmoor Local History Gallery, Aldershot; The Curtis Museum, Alton; The Allen Gallery, Alton; Museumof the Iron Age, Andover; Basing House, Basingstoke; The Willis Museum, Basingstoke; Milestones, Basingstoke; Burlesdon Windmill; Red House Museum and gardens, Christchurch; Eastleigh Museum; Flora Twort gallery, Pertersfield, Gosport Museum; SEARCH, Gosport; Havant Museum; Rockbourne Roman Villa Museum, Fordingbridge; Westbury Manor Museum, Fareham; Monitr 33, Portsmouth and Treadgolds Museum, Portsmouth.
140,000 objects and over 300,000 records can be accessed online, with 100% of records to be available by late 2004. Archaeology is described under Andover Museum, Decorative Art under Allen Gallery, Natural History under Curtis Museum, Social History under Curtis and Industrial History under Milestones.

Overview of how collections are displayed

Houses one of Southern England's most outstanding ceramics collections and the W H Allen Collection of watercolours and oil paintings including landscape scenes of the local countryside, temporary exhibitions of art, crafts, photography, local history and natural history, coffee lounge and a walled garden.
