Overview of collections

Collections are being displayed for the first time, including examples of costume and textiles, and natural history specimens, but the majoriy of the collections are subsumed in the Oxfordshire Museums Service collection store at Standlake.

Overview of how collections are displayed

Tooley's Boatyard, built at the same time as the Oxford Canal in the late 18th century is part of the new museum site. The waterways discovery gallery, a glass bridge spanning the Oxford Canal, has a "hands-on" space enabling visitors to find out about waterborne transport and the canal infrastructure including access to the historic working boatyard showing traditional and modern skills and machinery in use. There is a temporary exhibition gallery and space available for local artists, a tourist information centre, museum shop, 50-seat lecture theatre and café. The galleries illustrate themes from Banbury's history including the English Civil War, the manufacture of plush, Victorians, World War II and the Oxford Canal
