Overview of collections

The Museum's existing collections comprise an estimated 23,000 individual objects representative of the human and environmental history of the Borough of Dartford. Academic disciplines covered by the collections include Geology (the third largest collection in Kent), diverse Archaeology collections, particularly strong in Roman material, 16th-20th Social History with good collections of Victorian and Edwardian objects and Natural History. There are also minor collections of English and continental ceramics, an outstanding collection of 17th century Kentish trade tokens, 19th and 20th costume and an important and well-used collection of postcard views of Dartford.

Overview of how collections are displayed

The Museum has a permanent display telling the story of the town and its surrounding area from Roman times to the present day. The display covers local archaeology, history, natural history and geology and there are also special exhibitions throughout the year.

Star Objects at this location

The "Darenth Bowl" - a unique glass early Christian relic from the Dark Ages, discovered in the grounds of nearby Darenth Park Hospital by a local archaeological group in 1978. It bears a Christian inscription and yet dates from the 5th century - an era when Christianity was once thought to be non-existent in Kent. The bowl is therefore a very important part of Kent's history.
